Anastasia Chernyavsky and the censored photo

A Powerful Portrait of Contemporary Motherhood: Art, Controversy, and Feminine Strength

Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance.

Laurie Halse Anderson

It was June 13, 2013 when Anastasia Chernyavsky (a photographer of Russian origin currently living in San Francisco) immortalized herself in a black and white shot with her two children. She has been defined by many as the icon of the working mother and “a postpartum Madonna of the contemporary era”. The photo caused quite a stir and was censored by Facebook but recovered by various bloggers, it is now a symbol and icon on the web. A natural maternal beauty, also self-referential and hard-working, at times brazen but serene. Confident and in control of her own image and that of her offspring but also aware of its projection towards society. Immediately after the photo was removed from Anastasia’s profile, the artist replied in one of her posts: “I’m used to the distorted thinking of the masses about nude photos with women and children. I believe that if someone sees something dirty in my photos it is their perception, not my photography. If you don’t recognize what is art from what isn’t, it’s certainly not my fault.” If you are interested in other photos of the artist go to the site. At this point everyone should consider the issue according to their own sensitivity and draw the right conclusions. We are convinced that she has already become an icon of contemporary femininity.
