Exploring the Intersection of Reality and Fabrication in

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.

Simen Johan’s lush photographs merge artificiality and naturalism, creating visual compositions that reflect the paradoxical nature of our perception of the world—a blend of fabrication and direct observation. Johan’s work delves into the tensions between opposing forces, such as beauty and brutality, the familiar and the otherworldly, the natural and the artificial, the amusing and the eerie. As he explains, “I strive to create tension and confuse the boundaries between opposing forces…I often feel like I am attempting to reconcile the irreconcilable as I explore the paradoxical nature of existence.”

In his series “Until the Kingdom Comes,” which he began in 2005, Johan combines traditional photographic techniques with digital manipulation to construct intricate worlds that resemble uncanny versions of our reality. By inserting previously photographed plants and animals into landscapes composed of stitched-together images of natural vistas, Johan creates a vision of nature filtered through human desires and delusions. His work challenges viewers to question their perceptions of reality and the constructed nature of the world around them, presenting a surreal yet eerily familiar landscape where the boundaries between the real and the imagined are constantly shifting.
