Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” – Cesar A. Cruz

Since 1995, Danish artist Michael Elmgreen and Norwegian artist Ingar Dragset have been pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, questioning identity, belonging, and the structures that define cultural institutions. Living and working in Berlin, the duo is renowned for radically re-contextualizing objects and altering traditional modes of artistic representation, sparking discourse on social and political issues.

Elmgreen & Dragset draw inspiration from everyday life, using a sharp and unsettling sense of humor to critique contemporary power structures. Their large-scale public installations, blending architecture and performance, have gained international recognition. Notable works include Prada Marfa (2005), an isolated Prada boutique standing in the Texas desert, and Short Cut (2003), an installation featuring two cars seemingly emerging from Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, created in collaboration with Fondazione Nicola Trussardi.

Through their bold and thought-provoking imagery, Elmgreen & Dragset challenge audiences by reshaping expectations and confronting realities with both wit and spectacle. Their work continues to provoke dialogue and redefine the role of art in public space.
