From October 25, 2025, to February 22, 2026, the Museo Civico of Bassano del Grappa presents a major exhibition celebrating the work of Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899), one of the leading figures of Divisionism and an unparalleled interpreter of the mountains as both a physical and symbolic realm. Over a decade after the last exhibition dedicated to the artist, this ambitious showcase, realized with the support of the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz and the Galleria Civica G. Segantini in Arco, in collaboration with Dario Cimorelli Editore, retraces the painter’s entire artistic journey.

For the first time, Segantini’s works will be in direct dialogue with those of major European artists of his time, including Millet and Van Gogh, highlighting his influence on the most important artistic movements of the late 19th century. Born in Arco into a humble family, Segantini trained in the workshop of decorator Luigi Tettamanzi before attending evening classes at the Accademia di Brera. From his early years in Milan to his relocation to Brianza and later to the Rhaetian Alps, his work was shaped by a profound communion with nature and a relentless exploration of light and color. This pursuit ultimately led him to Divisionism and culminated in a symbolic and pantheistic reinterpretation of Alpine landscapes, rendered eternal through his masterful technique. The exhibition follows the key moments of his artistic and biographical journey, from his early “Scapigliati” influences to pastoral scenes, from bold experiments in color to his final, lyrical attempts to capture the spirit of the mountains. The chronological and geographical itinerary unfolds in four sections, enriched by thematic insights.

With around one hundred works from major public and private collections across Italy and Europe—including the Musée d’Orsay and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam—this remarkable exhibition offers a fresh perspective on one of the most extraordinary artists of the 19th century. Some of the featured works have been rediscovered after more than a century, adding to the uniqueness of the event. A comprehensive scientific catalog, published by Dario Cimorelli Editore, will accompany the exhibition. It includes essays by leading Segantini scholars, detailed analyses of his artistic evolution and painting techniques, the latest diagnostic studies, and annotated records of the exhibited works.
