A Journey Beyond the Everyday through Light and Lens

The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless.

In his 2013 “Shield” series, Japanese photographer Hideo Kobayashi creates a striking lunar environment that blurs the line between the familiar and the otherworldly. Known for his thematic consistency and unique approach to negating the ‘everyday-ness’ of things, Kobayashi’s work often balances nature with surreal, dreamlike elements. His gallery, Emon Photo, describes how Kobayashi’s artistic process transcends ordinary perceptions, turning simple scenes into extraordinary visual experiences.

In “Shield,” Kobayashi uses a large cocoon-like ball of light placed within isolated landscapes, crafting images that evoke a sense of animism and the hidden mysteries of the Japanese psyche. On his website, Kobayashi poetically describes his method: he imagines himself inside a large-format camera, opening the shutter to enter the frame. Using a simple device, he illuminates the scene, allowing light to transform the familiar into the extraordinary. This act of stepping inside the frame to manipulate light directly onto the entire screen redefines the everyday landscape, creating spaces that feel simultaneously intimate and alien. Through “Shield,” Kobayashi invites viewers to see the world not as it is, but as it could be—transformed by light, framed by the imagination.
