Aoshima Island is one of about a dozen “cat islands” in Japan, small places where cats significantly outnumber the human population. On Aoshima, more than a hundred cats roam the island, lounging in abandoned houses or confidently strutting through the quiet fishing village. The feline residents outnumber humans by six to one. Recently gaining popularity online, this tiny island has seen a sharp increase in tourist visits, overwhelming the few permanent residents.
